Today we Skyped with students in Mrs. Kelly Haley's class - 2nd graders at Southwood that also have an iPod cart. Both sets of students generated questions pertaining to the classroom, school and the use of the iPods. We shared some art work and they shared a science song. They are hard at work thinking of things that they would like to share during our next Skype session. I plan to email the students to ask them to reply with answers to questions.

Reflect on your experiences that you have had thus far with your Ipod/Ipad Carts.
Describe your progress with these tools. Progress is good but I so wish I could devote more of my time to them. Very glad that I am in partnership with a classroom teacher on this grant!
What have you and your class accomplished? We have learned about digital communication through email. We have successfully infused the iPod as a tool in every area of the curriculum throughout the day.
How are you using these tools? ...for student engagement, for student motivation, to enhance student teaching/learning? for your own professional growth/support? All of the above!
What procedures have you established for using these tools for learning? They are a tool used from the moment they walk in the door for morning work. AR tests, listening to their stories for the week, writing, using curriculum-based apps, center activities, writing, checking the local weather and comparing that to other places on the globe, Google Earth to find locations connected to reading stories or multicultural studies, using the calculator to check math problems, checking the time in various places in the world that they are studying, email to share and receive information to and from the teachers, and more writing.
Think about what you know about using these tools in the classroom. What skill, technique, or procedure have you learned that you could share with someone else? Make a list of your ipod/ipad skills. Gaggle email, AR app, writing ideas, research, video uploading, audio file uploading,
What is the best thing about using these tools with your students? What is the most challenging thing? The best thing is that is has become a tool that they use the entire day. Best thing is that it is a tool with so many functions and they all have them at their fingertips the entire day. Most challenging thing is finding planning time and schedule coordination to be with Elizabeth and these students.
Soon you will receive a survey for yourself and one for your students. Begin planning how you will do the surveys with your students. (Surveys are on Survey Monkey and the links will be sent to you.) We will most definitely forward this survey link via email to our students.

Today we introduced digital communication through email. We first talked about methods of communicating and ways that people particularly used a computer and the Internet to communicate by brainstorming a list. We discussed email and the appropriate school use of their gaggle.net email accounts. We talked about safety, responsibility and ethical choices in our communication. We talked about communicating with another second grade classroom. We modeled emailing a Note written on the iPod to a gaggle account by connecting an iPad to the data projector. We demonstrated email Reply. We shared how to email a picture and how to save that picture to your Camera Roll. We showed how to check email and how to compose an email. We modeled how to open a web hyperlink within an email. Students got to see how the email was integrated into the functions of the iPod for sharing. We discussed how we might use email within our classroom to receive assignments, respond with learning outcomes, share information with each other and to obtain a website for an assignment.
Some ways we will use email:
Receive an image and write descriptively using adjectives
Compose an email about learning during center time
Share an image
Take a quiz
Pose a question to teachers or others in the classroom
Communicate learning to teachers,principal, assistant principal, specialists or other adults at school

Today was Paperless Day and we were up for the challenge! Students started the day by listening to our story on the iPods and taking AR tests.
We did math stations and played coin counting Bingo, played the Rocket Math app and

In order to get our students ready to use the iPods, we questioned the students on prior experiences with iPods. Most everyone knew what an iPod was but about half had actually handled one. Two students have their own iPod. Then, we discussed the proper ways to care for and use the iPods. After our "mini-lesson" on iPods, a letter was sent home with the instructions of proper use and for permission to use the iPods with the students. The letters had to be signed by parent and student in order to use an iPod.
Excited is an understatement! The students are amazed and love using the iPods! The iPods are a tool that is kept on the corner of their desk on a daily basis. How has this project impacted your professional practice so far?

Tragic moment in iPods today - the AR app stopped working! Not one student asked to take the test on the computer, they were totally stuck in the thought of using their mobile tool! Heard comments of woe and perplexity of what to do when they couldn't use their iPod when they needed to take an AR test!
They were so used to using them at their desk, it took thought to go back "old school" and wait for a turn on the 2 classroom computers! Chatted with the Renaissance Learn folks and they are going to get back to us via email on how to fix the problem. We hope it is soon!
AR emailed us back and they have fixed our problem! Yeah!
Used the iPods to listen twice to the reading story for the week. Student could listen at their own pace. Teacher could pull students for DIBELS and then they could go right back to where they have left off on their story! Awesome flow of the classroom.

Typed letters on iPods to print for their family. Learned editing and proper sentence structure, capitalization and punctuation.
On an awesome note, I called Reading Street tech support and I got permission from them to move the audio stories on their CDs to the iPods (and they also emailed this to me to have it in "print")! So now they can listen individually, at their own pace, to the weekly stories. Yeah!

The students started taking AR tests on the iPods this week! This is so beneficial and is a huge time-saver. Instead of having to share two computers, each student has their own device to take an AR test. It has been so much fun to see how much they enjoy taking test on the iPods. It has also encouraged students to test more frequently! I would love to come up with a way to do more assessments with the iPods! Back to the drawing board!

This week we explored different educational apps and discussed the ways they would help us in the classroom. The students are becoming more familar every time they touch the iPods! It is awesome how they help each other and are so involved!

Rain, rain it's okay! We were unable to go outside for recess today! The students had the opportunity to explore iPods and different apps.

We continued using the iPods as a center. The students used the Notes feature to write about their favorite part of "A Turkey for Thanksgiving" and why. This was the first time I allowed students to remove and return iPods to cart. They were very careful and did a great job!!

This week we started using iPods in a center. In the iPod center students were to write sentences with spelling words to become better familiar with the Notes feature. Children that were more familiar with the functions such as, capitalization, editing, and punctuation, of the keyboard helped the other group memebers. Students did awesome with the iPods as a writing tool.

Had to do some maintenance today. Hooked up the one iPod individually and chose Restore. Chose to back up. After this I chose Restore from back up. The Wifi connected! :)

Today is the first day for using the iPods. We have all the AUPs signed and returned from home.
First we are attempting iPod Survey 1 using Google Forms to see what prior knowledge students have about the iPods. Information from that survey is found here: iPod Survey 1.docx. This will enable students to browse to the Internet and complete a Google Form while giving insight into their iPod knowledge and exposure.
Then we are trying out a FREE app called Carve-a-Pumpkin from Parents Magazine. This will enable students to practice searching the iPod for an app, use their finger to perform tasks, introduce them to the camera roll as they save their carvings to the pictures and set their home screen with their carving pictures.
Reflections of the day:
Not everyone got to the pumpkin carving app. Two iPods had issues with the Internet not connecting even though it showed connection under WiFi and I had the iPod right at the WAP. We will carry Halloween over to tomorrow!
Students did wonderfully navigating the Internet and completing the survey. They were also great about helping each other learn.
I must get the home screen consistent on all the iPods.
